Deferred adjudication is a type of probation in Texas that upon successful completion avoids a criminal conviction. If a probationer successfully completes deferred adjudication probation, the charges will be dismissed. Once the charges have been dismissed, the individual can file a nondisclosure petition. Once granted, the nondisclosure order will remove the incident from the public record and allows the individual to legally deny the incident. Most misdemeanors are immediately eligible, while most felonies require a five or ten waiting period.
All criminal convictions are final and will remain on your record forever. Thus, avoiding a conviction can make deferred a good option.
